EGYPT
In the midst of uncertainty, the Presbyterian Church of Egypt is hard at work. They are planting churches and revitalizing congregations that have been faithful for well over a hundred years. Of the 417 congregations which are a part of the Synod of the Nile, 25% of those were planted in the last 10 years---this is a movement with energy and vision! The team, led by Marilyn Borst, TOF’s Associate Director for Partnership Development, will visit some of these initiatives and see how God is working through his people. We will experience exciting new church developments in the city and in satellite communities. We will also explore possibilities for establishing ongoing church-to-church partnerships.
While in Cairo, we will stay at the Evangelical Theological Seminary (ETSC), where leaders are trained for congregations throughout the Middle East. The visionary leadership at ETSC has led the tremendous growth in student numbers (from 67 in 2000 to over 400 currently). We will meet students and hear inspiring stories of their aspirations for ministry, and visit the Pyramids of Giza and the museum which houses the spectacular treasures from King Tut’s tomb.
We will travel south to Aswan to encourage---and be encouraged by congregation old and new in this remoter region of the country, and take a day trip to be amazed by the Temple of Rameses the Great, carved into a mountain at Abu Simbel, overlooking Lake Nasser.
Estimated land cost:
$2,850 including accommodations, transportation, most meals, transfers, flight to Aswan and touring (does not include $25 visa upon arrival and international airfare).
