Rwanda Day 7: Lakeside Ministries

Rwanda Day 7 photo

Lake Kivu, which makes up a large part of Rwanda's western border, is one of the deepest and most voluminous freshwater bodies in the world. This was our destination for a peaceful overnight at another of the Guest Houses run by the Presbyterian Church of Rwanda. Not far away we would visit one of the earlier mission stations which developed into an extensive group of Presbyterian ministries including primary, secondary and vocational schools; a small retreat center; a church; and an orphanage. Most surprisingly, it was also home to a convent of several dozen Presbyterian sisters (nuns) who run the orphanage and teach in the schools. They are also busy making crafts, the sale of which supports the ministries here. We were glad to help them out by purchasing beautifully made fabric totes as well as cards made with scenes from thin strips of banana leaves.
