Tumaini Children's Ministries - May 2014 Update

Tumaini Children’s Ministries care for vulnerable children regardless of their tribe, creed, or religious affiliations. Due to the increased level of poverty in the area around the Riamukurwe parish and in rural Kenya in general, there are many children who are not being cared for properly. The Tumaini ministry helps prevent these children from becoming street children. Because of their precarious situations, these children are recommended to us either by church leaders or the Department of Social Welfare. We provide accommodation, education, healthcare, food, and clothing. We create self-reliance and opportunities through vocational training. We also provide behavioral guidance. We are encouraged by the accomplishments of many of these children and would like to share a few of their stories:

Namumu Orphanage Center - May 2014 Update

Dear Partners and Friends of Namumu Children,

Greetings from The Outreach Foundation. A group from Outreach including the Rev. Anne Hilborn, Charlotte, N.C. and Ebralie Mwizerwa, Projects Coordinator for The Outreach Foundation, recently traveled to Siavonga to assess Namumu Orphanage Center (NOC). Several partners from the U.S. have expressed concerns for the state of the buildings at Namumu and also for the care the children are receiving. We would like to bring you an update on how things are at Namumu as partners in this noble task of caring for the least of these in Jesus’ name.

Clean Drinking Water in Kenya - February 2014 Update

Dear Friends,

The phrase “water is life” was heard many times this day! We recently dedicated the borehole at Nasoroni. This town has been without water for three years. We found out about their situation while we were building their church. The fifteen year-old generator used at their borehole died and couldn't be repaired. We teamed up with another NGO and the village to raise approximately $12,000 and bought them a new generator.

Dustin and Sherri Ellington (PCUSA) - November 2013 Update

Dear Friends,

George, one of seven students from Malawi currently at Justo Mwale Theological University College, is finishing his studies this year. He has written his 50+ page senior thesis, and I (Sherri) have had the privilege of editing the English for him. I finished working through it last night, then opened up the Bible this morning and was struck by the similarity between what Matthew and Jesus describe in Matthew 9:36-38 and the situation George describes in Malawi.

Madagascar has been in crisis since a coup d’état in March 2009. A foreign diplomat recently noted that there is no rule of law in Madagascar. Crime is way up in both urban and rural areas. Recent assessments found that over 90% of the people are living below the poverty line. To make matters worse, locusts have been destroying crops in many parts of the country, and bubonic plague is on the rise.

Street Children's Ministry in Kigali - August 2013 Update

The Presbyterian Church of Rwanda created the Centre Presytérian d’Amour des Jeunes in 1998 to help alleviate the consequences of the genocide and war that left a multitude of orphaned children in the streets. The situation is a little different now. Children are on the streets now because they fled poverty, abuse, and family violence. The center provides a facility for education, recreation, and spiritual activities. Here is a story from one of the children:

John and Gwenda Fletcher - July 2013 Update

Dear Friends,

With a wavering voice and shaking hands, Kapinga haltingly asked me for the money to pay her secondary school tuition and fees. She was due to begin 11th grade, but her family had experienced a difficult year and there were no funds to pay for her schooling. While the story of hardship leading to lack of money for school fees is a familiar one, Kapinga’s situation was unusual.

Holistic Evangelism in Tete Province June Trip Report

Dear Friends of Tete Province,

My wife Elizabeth, Trustee Tom McDow, and I have recently returned from leading a trip to Tete Province, Mozambique, sponsored by The Outreach Foundation. There were two teams traveling with us. The first week, thirteen team members came from Tennessee, West Virginia, North Carolina and Florida. The second week, six team members came from Tennessee, South Dakota and Florida. The teams traveled to different areas in Tete Province. The first team visited the Zobue and Tete City Districts where much of the work of the Holistic Evangelism Project has taken place. The second team visited the more remote Mutarara District. Both teams experienced exhilarating worship services that both inspired us and humbled us.
