Egypt
Though a small minority within a challenging context, the Presbyterian Church of Egypt (350,000+ members in 400+ churches) has much to teach American Presbyterians about being “missional.” Rather than simply seeking to preserve themselves, this church is increasingly looking outward, to serve its Christian and Muslim neighbors in need and plant new churches. As the largest Arabic-speaking Protestant body, they also seek to bless their region and even refugees in Europe.
The Evangelical Theological Seminary of Cairo is the vital center of this outward focus of the church, and will be our home base in Cairo. In addition to meeting students and faculty, we will visit a variety of new and old churches and ministries, as our hosts in the Synod of the Nile expose us to their work. We will provide updates as we learn where our hosts will send us.
Since the Christians in Egypt are the most directly descended from the ancient Egyptians (Copts), we will certainly see and learn some of the ancient as well as the Christian history, from the pyramids of Giza and Egyptian Museum (King Tut’s splendor and mummies), to ancient churches and monasteries. This trip will be led by the Rev. Dr. Nancy Fox, a past president of Outreach’s board of trustees.
Estimated land cost is $2,500. (International airfare not included)
