Tete Province Trip Blog Day 1

Our trip to Tete Province, sponsored by The Outreach Foundation, was great. Our four-member team included fellow Trustee Tom McDow, Outreach Foundation Executive Director Mark Mueller, and my wife Elizabeth and me. We gathered in Washington, DC, on Monday, June 10, and departed for Africa the next day. After flying most of Tuesday and Wednesday, we met Sebber in Blantyre, Malawi. After a joyful reunion at the airport, we drove to the Malawi border near Mozambique, stopping on the way to see several wells we had drilled. We finally arrived in Tete Province on Thursday morning. We met up with Carlos and the pastor for the Zobue church district, Rev. Valentim Manuel. We had a meeting with the District Commissioner for the Zobue area, who thanked us on behalf of the government for the wells, schools, churches, teacher houses, and the clinic that had been built in the past few years. Then on to a visit with the Zobue church. The church members greeted us warmly, dancing, singing, and hospitality. Our hearts were full as we left them.

Ukraine Trip Blog Day 3

“As Ananias was to Paul after his conversion (Acts 10) we are here with you in that hope for your encouragement. Paul emerged from his time with Ananias ‘strengthened’ and we pray the same will be true for you because we were together with the Lord among us.” With these words, Tom Boone, Associate Director for Mission, opened the resiliency retreat in Kyiv. Hosted by Ukraine Evangelical Theological Seminary (UETS), a team of 11 from the United States, Poland, and Lithuania gathered with 43 military chaplains, pastors, and their wives. For three days we shared stories, prayed, and learned about trauma and PTSD during the war in Ukraine. Three ballistic missile threats caused our phones to alarm during the day, but praise be to God, the retreat was shielded from night attacks, which meant three nights of undisturbed sleep.

Ukraine Trip Vlog Day 2

On this day two trip vlog, Rev. Dr. Tom Boone interviews Rev. Rod Stone from Community Presbyterian Church in Pinehurst, NC. Rev. Stone was an integral part of the trip, providing training to military chaplains headed back to the front lines to support Ukrainian soldiers. Watch the video above to hear Rev. Stone’s reflections.

Ukraine Trip Blog Day 1

"I thank God in all my remembrance of you” (Phil 1,3). Remembering, referred to as “remembrance” in scripture, is essential and unifying in our visits to our partners. We remember our partners not just in prayers and conversations, but most powerfully when we visit their homes and lands. Like the stones of Aaron (Exodus 28:12), we help each other remember the Lord’s goodness during the atrocities of war.
