COMPASSION MINISTRIES
NORTH KOREA
Korea has been a true success story of the Presbyterian Church (USA)’s global mission efforts. Yet since 1945 Koreans in the northern part of the peninsula have been separated from family and friends in the south. The church in the north is but a shadow of its former days when the capital of the north, Pyongyang, was called the “Jerusalem of East Asia.”
The Presbyterian Church (USA) and the Presbyterian Church of Korea have continued a witness to North Korea by programs of feeding the hungry, caring for orphans and ministering to persons with disabilities. One avenue where God’s love has shown brightly to help those in need in North Korea is the Lighthouse Foundation, which is directed by PCUSA co-workers Sue and Art Kinsler.
Since 2003 the Lighthouse Foundation has supported the Bongsu Noodle Factory, two soymilk factories, several orphanages, and schools for deaf and blind persons. This ministry, supported by The Outreach Foundation, is a living testimony to the words of St. Francis, “Preach the gospel. If necessary, use words.”
